Bed and Breakfast by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on drafting film 10″ x 14″

Bed and Breakfast

I just love hummingbirds. The more you learn about these fascinating creatures the more amazing they become. Hummer meals are quick affairs with long gaps between visits from mom, so getting some good reference photos of this family took me several hours over two days. When you click to enlarge this piece, you’ll see I am experimenting with a new kind of linework, and also added a touch of glitter to make the hummers’ heads sparkle. (Hey, who said glitter doesn’t belong in fine art?)

Raindance by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored Pencil on Drafting Film 12″ x 16″

Raindance

One afternoon in Hawaii I found myself totally captivated, watching the interplay of sun and rain on the water, and I knew had to recreate that rhythm and feeling of movement in colored pencil.

Update 7-2-20: “Raindance” has been selected to appear in the 28th Annual Colored Pencil Society of America International Exhibition! 126 pieces were chosen out of nearly 800.

Rose Crush by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on watercolor paper 12″ x 12″

Rose Crush

A quick snapshot of a bouquet at the market became Rose Crush. The roses were luscious and inspired me to create a piece that brings to mind the rich scent of rose. This piece was accepted into the Colored Pencil Society of America’s Explore This! juried show and is the subject of one of my workshops.

Wanderlust

A bright summer day and the thrill of the road calls while the sunny chairs and beautiful view invite you to stay. For me, this piece is about the lure of adventure and its interplay with the comfort of place (in whatever sense you wish). This piece took first place at the Edmonds Arts Festival in 2018.

Rapt by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on drafting film 11″ x 14″”

Rapt

Rapt, a focused young hawk in a winterbare tree, is the first piece in which I used the special line technique I developed called “fretting,” which has become a signature technique of my artwork. The use of drafting film enhances the ethereal feeling of the artwork.

Main Street in Color by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on drafting film 12″ x 12″”

Main Street in Color

Every year on patriotic holidays the small towns here in the Sky Valley line their main streets with U.S. flags. It is stirring to see the normally brick and concrete streets dressed up proudly in all that color. This is one of the first pieces to use the my signature fretting technique. This artwork is featured in Colored Pencil Treasures 6.

Chasing the Sun by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on drafting film 14″ x 14″”

Chasing The Sun

I have a deep love of hitting the road and finding adventure. When your day on the road starts, misty and golden, it’s exciting to think about the things you might find around the corners ahead. This piece is about the adventure of chasing the sun on the road and more importantly, in our lives..

Corgis in Paradise by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored Pencil on Drafting Film, 7″ x 22″

Corgis in Paradise

We can all use a smile about now, right? So here are 21 crazy Pembroke and Cardigan corgis enjoying a little chill time on a tropical beach. In this latest piece, I take a break from “serious art” for something a little more madcap. Cartooning — and creating artwork that makes folks smile — just tickles me, so I took a little break from the more artsy stuff and let the corgis come out to play.

The Colors of Maui by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on drafting film 16″ x 12″

The Colors of Maui

At a roadside stop on the road to Hana and taking a time out for a refreshing cold drink, I saw this rustic jar and bucket bouquet decorating a lanai. These flowers, so unusual and tropical to me, were simply fresh-picked wildflowers here. The colors of Maui. This piece won Best in Show at the 2018 Evergreen State Fair.

Still Life with Harley by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on watercolor paper 12″ x 12″

Still Life with Harley

Out shopping one day , I saw what had to be the most beautiful motorcycle ever. Highly chromed and glinting in the sun on that bright blue day, the Harley Road King was dazzling, and I knew I had to make it my next subject. With a single red apple placed on the rider’s helmet, this piece is my tongue-in-cheek version of a still life. This piece won second place at the Edmonds Arts Festival in 2019, was accepted into the CPSA International Show in 2018, and won First Place and Judge’s Choice rosette at the Evergreen State Fair in 2017.

Rustic Blues by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on watercolor paper 10″ x 10″

Rustic Blues

A friend of mine posted a photo on Facebook of a faded hydrangea bloom, writing, “My new favorite colors.” That inspired me to gather some dried hydrangeas and arrange them in an enamelware coffee pot to capture those lovely muted colors. This piece was featured in a cover article of February 2017 issue of Ann Kullberg’s Color Magazine. It was also included in Colored Pencil Treasures, Vol. 5.

Wild Dogwood by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on watercolor paper 11″ x 9″

Wild Dogwood

Every year the wild dogwood bloom in the woods near my home in the Sky Valley. Normally, dogwood blooms are a bit too-high up in the tree to see very well, but one day I discovered a rain-soaked branch hanging low, with a sweeping spray of delicate ivory flowers, as the world around them was greening-up for spring.

Fall Color by Rhonda Dicksion

Fall Color

This piece was inspired by a photo expedition to a local produce farm, and to me it totally captures the feel of autumn: not quite as bright as summer, but not ready to give in to winter.

Wild Sky

The Sky River is one of my favorite places in the world. When I get busy and life gets complicated, I find myself drawn to the edges of the river to relax and feel the sense of well-being that the wild river provides. I created this piece as a way to bring my soul right back to the river when life seems to be keeping me far away.

Afternoon in Yellowstone

On a trip to Yellowstone Park a few years ago, my dad and I spotted two magnificent elk peacefully enjoying a lazy afternoon. The warm and overcast day felt alive, and these magnificent animals perfectly at home there. This artwork is on drafting film, giving it a warm glow.

Old Red

I spotted this old truck near a homestead in Taos, NM. This image speaks of America and of our character as Americans and as Westerners: durable, strong, resilient through passing storms and coming ones. Winner of First Place and Outstanding Achievement at the Evergreen State Fair. Also juried in to the 2017 Colored Pencil Society of America International Show in Washington, D.C.

Enlightenment by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on watercolor paper 10″ x 10″

Enlightenment

Strong shadows, bright flame, and coppery highlights are so lovely in colored pencil, so when I was asked to create a tutorial to be featured in the book, Draw Reflections in Colored Pencil, this copper lantern was a luscious choice. For me, this piece symbolizes inspiration and the steady light of knowledge in the darkness..

Dream of the Dimestore Pony by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on watercolor paper 14″ x 10″

Dream of the Dimestore Pony

This little mechanical pony in the foyer of our rural market, looking out at the parking lot. I’ve taken lots of photos of him, and one day I wondered what he thinks of day-in and day-out, watching people come and go. What would he dream? I like to think that this piece speaks to all of us with wild hearts that long to run free.

Double Delight at Dusk Pony by Rhonda Dicksion

Colored pencil on watercolor paper 12″ x 16″

Double Delight at Dusk

In a dark room on a winter afternoon, the faint light coming in through a window gave a meditative, romantic look to a bouquet of roses. Done in grisaille technique (applying the shading first, followed by the color), this is one of my first pieces and one of my very favorites.
